Are dental implants worth it?

Tooth loss can be a serious problem. Teeth are necessary for numerous reasons. Not only are they the first thing people notice when you speak, smile, or laugh, they are essential for chewing and talking. All that, besides being instrumental in aiding a person’s overall appearance and self-esteem.

The sheer number of tooth replacement options can be as daunting as losing teeth. That’s why we encourage patients in need of dental implants to get in touch with us. At Red Bud Dental, we will educate you on your options to help you make informed decisions personalized for your needs.

Dental implants are usually the best-looking and longest-lasting of all the available options. If you’d like to learn more about them, please continue reading.

Are dental implants the best choice for tooth replacement?

Each patient’s situation is unique. Hence, each treatment for a missing tooth is tailored to the patient’s needs. For the vast majority of patients, however, there is no better option than dental implants.

Dental bridges and dentures may be cheaper options for patients on a tight budget or who have numerous missing teeth, but they don’t last as long as dental implants. This is why every patient needs to be aware of the alternatives.

Implants require a long-term investment. When properly cared for, they can last a lifetime and provide numerous other health benefits for the patient. Implants can also help with bone resorption which can occur when a person is missing teeth. They also feel and function like natural teeth, allowing you to eat whatever you want without restriction.

For the vast majority of people, dental implants are the best option for replacing missing teeth. In order to determine if you’re a good candidate for this type of treatment, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with the Red Bud team.

Dental implants prevent bone loss.

We’ve outlined the advantages of dental implants as follows:

Implants are the only way to preserve the structure and strength of your jawbone. Otherwise, after a tooth is lost, the bone will deteriorate over time due to a process known as resorption.
Implants resemble natural teeth once they’re restored with porcelain crowns.
Implants allow patients to eat whatever they want because they fully restore bite-functionality.
Implants are a life-long solution when patients take proper care of them.
Dental implants are the next best thing to natural teeth according to many dentists and oral surgeons.
Dental implants can improve the appearance of your face

Wrinkles and facial alterations are two of the most obvious signs of ageing. The lack of collagen in the skin is the primary cause of this, but few patients realize that tooth loss can also be a contributing factor. When multiple teeth are missing, the lower third of the face is more likely to appear sunken and wrinkled because of the lack of support teeth provide.

These facial changes can be avoided or reversed with implant-supported dentures, which can help you look younger.

How do traditional full dentures impact a patient’s facial appearance?

In the United States, millions of people lose teeth each year due to decay, trauma, and periodontal disease. The good news is that today’s patients have a wide range of options for replacing missing teeth, and we encourage them to seek professional advice as soon as possible.

Dentures are the first option that many patients consider when they lose teeth. We encourage our patients to look at other options, even if they are both good alternatives for some (especially those patients on a tight budget).

In the long run, traditional dentures aren’t the best option because they don’t affect the resorptive process that is triggered by tooth loss.

Tooth loss affects the bone tissue that supports the tooth. When the body recognises that a bone no longer serves its purpose, it initiates the resorptive process in order to avoid wasting tissue. It’s because dental implants prevent bone resorption that they are regarded as the most convenient replacement option. In the early stages, bone resorption only affects the jawbone, but if patients don’t replace missing teeth, the resorption will spread to the rest of the jawbone, altering facial appearance. Patients who want to maintain a youthful facial appearance should give dental implants serious consideration..
Bone resorption affects the appearance of the face

Every tooth has its root in the jawbones. When you eat, you put light pressure on the roots of the jawbone, which stimulates the bone and keeps it strong and healthy. Bone deterioration occurs when there is no stimulation in an area where teeth have been extracted. Bone resorption is the name given to this process. The resorption of the jawbone will weaken the lower third of the face over time, resulting in a sunken appearance.

Dental implants not only help with missing teeth, but also prevent jawbone deterioration. Over time, the jawbone shrinks, necessitating constant adjustments for traditional dentures that are not supported by implants. Even so, care has to be taken. If your dentures don’t fit properly and are just resting on your gums, they aren’t stimulating your jawbone in the way that they should be. The patient will eventually need a new denture after a few adjustments.
Can I stop bone resorption?

You should contact your dentist as soon as a tooth is missing and inquire about options for preserving bone in the area. The only way to keep this bone from deteriorating is to use dental implants to keep it functional.
How do dental implants prevent bone resorption?

A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace extracted teeth. Osseointegration begins as soon as the implants are placed by the dentist. Between four and six months after a titanium implant is implanted into a patient’s bone, new bone tissue grows around and adheres to the implant. A patient’s chewing pressure can be transmitted to his or her surrounding bone once the osseointegration process has been completed. As a result, the body doesn’t begin the process of bone resorption because the bone tissue remains healthy.

Dental Implants For Dentures
(Snap-In Dentures)

To keep a full set of dentures in place, Dr. Hsu can surgically insert two to four dental implants into each dental arch. Removable or fixed replacement teeth are both options (only a dentist can remove them). You won’t have to worry about your implant-supported denture rubbing against your gums or slipping out of place with either option. Implant-supported dentures make it easier to eat and converse.

Implants can still be a good option for patients who have lost a large number of teeth or even all of them. They don’t need an implant for every missing tooth. Rather than an entire arch of implants, only a few implants are used to hold a denture in place. Implant-supported or implant-retained dentures are the most common terms for this type of dentures. Implant-supported dentures are also known as “snap-in” dentures because the denture “snaps” onto the implants once placed in the jaw.

Photo above shows a model of false teeth (denture) and 4 dental implants to retain and support the denture.

Implant-supported dentures are a solid option for patients. Because they don’t allow bone resorption, they don’t require as much maintenance as traditional dentures.

What are “snap-in” dentures?

“Snap-in” dentures are a set of removable false teeth, held in place by dental implants screwed into the jawbone. These dentures are still removable, but they are more stable and secure than traditional dentures because they snap into implants.

Compared with traditional dentures, “snap-in” dentures have several advantages. They can also be taken out and replaced, making it simple to keep the mouth and dentures clean. To use a snap-on denture, you’ll need two or four locator attachments; the implants are linked to these attachments. First, the dentist will examine your case to determine whether you need two or four implants to support the denture. In addition, snap-in dentures offer superior retention because they are supported by implants, making them more comfortable to eat and speak with.

Regardless of the type of denture you wear, we recommend that you schedule regular dental visits. Denture fit, implant stability, and gum health, all need to be checked during your regular visits. In some cases, dentures may need to be relined or adjusted due to changes in the shape of the mouth with time and age.

Eat What You Love!

Before & after dental implants. The result looks very natural.

Implant-supported dentures are a terrific choice because:

They are easy to remove and simpler to clean.
They don’t need denture adhesives.
They are a more stable solution.
Eating is more comfortable with them.
They are more affordable than most people think.

The peace of mind offered by Implant-supported dentures

There are a variety of options for dealing with the loss of a tooth. However, when all of a patient’s teeth are missing, full dentures are the most common solution. Even if a patient opts for an implant-supported denture, their facial structure and bone tissue will be preserved.

A snap-in denture procedure includes the following steps: Dr. Hsu will begin by placing four or more dental implants on the upper arch and two to four on the lower arch. Between four and six months, you’ll have to wear temporary dentures while you wait for the permanent denture to arrive. Permanent dentures can be fitted after the implants have fully integrated into the jawbone, allowing you to eat normally without worrying about irritated gums or denture slippage.

All-on-4 or 6 (Full Mouth Implants)

The all-on-4 dentures are a great option for patients who have lost all their teeth. Unlike traditional dentures (which can be made of acrylic), these dentures are held in place by four dental implants instead of just one.

This type of denture is much more comfortable for patients because it has better retention than conventional ones. Unlike traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures stay in place without the uncomfortable acrylic “plate” covering the roof of your mouth as you eat..

This procedure, also known as “one smile day” or “smile in a day,” can give you a completely new smile in just one appointment with all-on-4 dentures. The phrase “teeth in a day” is a bit of a misnomer because it takes several appointments to get there. But, with the Red Bud team placing four implants along the dental arch on the same day (eight if both arches are being replaced), you’ll leave the office with a new set of teeth after the surgery, all thanks to the temporary bridge that he’ll attach to the implants. You’ll return to the office to have your permanent dentures fitted after the implants have had time to fully integrate into your bone (usually takes four to six months).

It’s critical that patients who opt for this procedure return to the office on a regular basis to have their implants cleaned.

How to care for snap-on dentures vs. all-on-4 dentures

Red Bud Dental recommends that patients who wear dentures like snap-on or all-on-4 come in for professional cleaning and examinations on a regular basis, even if they no longer have any natural teeth. Dental hygienists are able to thoroughly clean the abutments of implanted teeth by removing dentures, but in most cases they don’t need to be removed.

Using a Waterpik (water flosser) is also a great way to ensure that your dentures or bridges are thoroughly cleaned. Keep your gums in good health in order to avoid infections and periodontal problems that could affect your dental implants.

Why are dental implants the best solution for tooth loss?

There are many other advantages to dental implants besides preventing bone resorption and keeping your jaw in good health. Implants are the only restoration that can achieve the same results in terms of both appearance and function as natural teeth. When you eat, laugh, and speak, you won’t even notice that your natural teeth have been replaced by dental implants.

An implant-supported denture won’t move or fall out even if you have many missing teeth. Dental implants are the benchmark for teeth replacement.

Dental implants can help prevent sagging skin

Mainly, jawbone shape and tooth position are responsible for determining facial structure in the lower third of the face. Having healthy teeth and a strong jawbone is essential to preventing bone resorption.

Teeth maintain the normal distance between the tip of the nose and the chin in addition to preserving bone tissue. With missing teeth, the upper and lower jawbones fuse together, resulting in an older-looking face.

To keep the jawbones strong and in their proper position, dental implants act just like natural teeth, providing the necessary height and structure, preventing premature wrinkles and skin sagging.
Can dental implants help me appear more youthful?

For patients who have lost a large number of teeth due to tooth decay, dental implants have a significant impact on their facial structure.

The fullness and health of the face can be attributed to teeth. A person’s face appears more wrinkled, collapsed, and sunken when teeth are missing, because the soft tissues are no longer supported. After tooth loss, the jawbone begins to deteriorate because of bone resorption.

Dental implants are the only replacement option that help preserve the jawbone to maintain a youthful appearance.
If I don’t want dental implants, what are my options?

You should contact your dentist as soon as a tooth is missing and inquire about options for preserving bone in the area. The only way to keep this bone from deteriorating is to use dental implants to keep it functional.

Other tooth replacement options are:

Dental bridges
Partial dentures
Full dentures
Not replacing the tooth and leaving a gap

Teeth in a day

“Teeth in a day” allows patients to improve their smile in just one visit. All teeth are extracted, dental implants are screwed into the jawbone, and a temporary bridge is attached to keep the patient’s teeth in place while the implants heal. The phrase “teeth in a day” is somewhat misleading because it requires multiple visits to get there.

The temporary bridge is replaced by a permanent zirconia bridge within four to six months. Implant-supported bridges are the closest to natural teeth in terms of comfort, appearance, and function.

A surgical guide is used by Dr. Hsu to ensure that the implants are placed correctly. The guide allows surgeons to see exactly where and at what angle the implants need to be placed. Successful outcomes are achieved with this type of treatment and it provides excellent results in terms of both comfort and appearance.
